Knowing the difference between using the wholesale and the retail channel could save you thousands of dollars when getting a home loan.

We had a client come in recently with a quote from a retail mortgage lender (a company you would be very, very familiar with) and they said, “Hey, is there a way that you can maybe get a lower price on this quote?”

So we went ahead and took the quote, looked it up, and did a price comparison for them in the wholesale channel. And wouldn’t you know it, but we came up with a quote with the same rate for $6,000 less in closing costs than the retail quote. 

But here’s the little secret that is crazy: The quote actually used the same company they had gotten their original quote from, except we got it through the wholesale channel.

But how does it work?

I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true. So many of these big mortgage lenders have wholesale channels, and brokers like us have access to a lot of the big wholesale lenders.

We have agreements with them to get the bottom of the barrel rates, the sweetest mortgage deals in the wholesale market. And most of the time, those deals are much better than what you would find if you went to their retail outlets.
